A traumatic event is any event that exposes a person to a real or perceived threat to life or person or status. It can be an accidental death, an act of terrorism, or a near death experience or exposure to the grotesque. When a traumatic event such as this occurs, it overwhelms our normal coping mechanisms and we experience what is known as an acute stress response. This is a normal response to an abnormal event.
